Different projects share common extrusion knowledge The Filament Making process varies in difficulty based on the material. It generally follows a basic, trial-and-error methodology that can be accelerated with proper knowledge.

What research results do you want to achieve?

Each grade is unique Each polymer family, like PEEK, has a specific thermal range and comes in various grades for different uses, requiring unique extrusion parameters and handling.

What material do you want to process?

The importance of viscosity Extrudability mainly depends on material viscosity, with higher viscosity ensuring stable pressure in the extruder barrel for better control of output diameter.

On a scale from 1 to 5, how confident are you that your material can be turned into filament and 3D-printed?

Theory and practice A basic understanding of extrusion theory and polymer chemistry is beneficial. What matters most is the research methodology and understanding how to experiment with extrusion parameters (temperature, rotation speed) and how to analyze data.

On a scale from 1 to 5, how would you rate your knowledge of the Filament Making process?

Material limitations and hardware limitations Certain limitations are intrinsic to the material, like its flowing behavior. Other limitations are connected to the equipment. The fact that our Filament Maker is desktop size makes it possible to achieve extrusion results with small batches (typically 2-3kg) but also means that the throughput is limited. All that said, research can often push boundaries.

Are you aware of the limitations of extrusion and 3D printing?

Certain challenges can be predicted Certain challenges and limitations can be predicted based on your project definition and material. Other challenges can only be discovered in the lab while experimenting.
Example: we know that the high crystallinity of HDPE always tends to cause ovality issues in extrusion and adhesion problems in 3D printing.

Validation can take several forms:

Validating that your material can be extruded by running a Melt Flow Index test. This only requires 200g of material
Validating the extrusion parameters to turn the material into printable filament. This typically requires a full day of work but only 3kg of material
Attending a hands-on workshop in case you want to validate your material with us in person
